Introduction to Mountaineering

Smugglers Notch

Participate in this one-day course where students will be educated on techniques and skills necessary to live and survive in cold weather. Students will begin the day by learning how to walk with crampons on progressively steeper terrain. Students will then learn self-arrest techniques and rope-team movement. At mid-morning, students will ascend a short gully route which involves some technical climbing. Students will then traverse the top of the ridge and learn about mountain navigation. A short avalanche awareness clinic will be held after lunch at the top of the notch, then students will descent via fixed ropes and rappels. This course takes place at Smuggler’s Notch. Students should be in good physical condition and have the clothing and experience to spend the day in a cold and windy environment.
