School Teams
School Teams
Here at the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center, we believe in furthering the sport of climbing. We make it our mission to pass on our passion for climbing to people of all ages and ability levels. In furtherance of that goal, we are proud to offer climbing in a competitive school sport format. We have both Junior High and High School climbing teams that practice at the gym 1-2 times a week. Each month we host 2 competitions: one for the Junior High teams and one for the High School teams. The competition format and rules follow closely to standard USA Climbing Competition standards. Interested? Read on to discover how easy it is to start a climbing team at your school!
Starting a team at your school couldn’t be easier. All you need is a volunteer that is willing to take on the responsibility of being a coach. This person could be a staff member, parent, or even an older sibling. Climbing team coaches act as advisors to the student participants. They run practices and accompany teams to the competitions. NO CLIMBING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! In reality, the time commitment to being a coach is very small. 1-2 hours a week plus competitions is all it takes to have a successful climbing team. Coaches also get a free membership to the gym. Once you have a coach you simply need to get the word out. Generate student interest through word of mouth or take home flyers. You will need a minimum of 5 students to start a team. Be sure to stress that no previous climbing experience is necessary and anyone can join!
Cost is at the forefront of everyones thinking these days, and we understand. We have worked hard to keep the beautiful sport of climbing accessible and affordable. It doesn’t cost your school anything to start a team at GMRCC. Students wishing to participate simply pay to use the facility. They have the option to pay per day at the student rate of $7 (only for Rutland weekdays 3-6) or buy a student membership for $200. The membership is valid for the whole 2012-2013 school year and following summer (all student memberships expire August 31st). Members benefit from unlimited access to the climbing gym during regular business hours. Additional membership benefits include discounts on gear, access to clinics, and other perks.
Practices take place after school at the gym. Coaches are expected to be present and keep an attendance roster for their team. The practice can consist of any mixture of fitness based activities, the most important of which is climbing. Students will practice balance, footwork, body position, and other climbing techniques. These exercises will help them to develop healthy habits and core fitness.
Once a month GMRCC will host 2 climbing competitions, one each for Junior High and High School. The students compete as a team. Each individual climber submits their top 3 climbs for the night and those are combined to get a team score.
Climbing as a sport is an amazing experience. No other activity can match climbing for its combination of physical and mental challenge. In keeping with the national push towards healthier youth, you simply will not find a better option. Where the traditional sports will follow you perhaps into college, climbing is an activity you can do for a lifetime.
